Alpine forests are a suitable habitat for the Hazel Dormouse

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Hazel Dormouse ( Muscardinus avellanarius) is commonly considered a typical lowland species, occasionally observed at higher elevations in mountain habitats. This study began with preliminary investigations the Gran Paradiso National Park Western Alps, where nests of Dormice were around 2000 m a.s.l. In 2019, mark-recapture project started two valleys (Valsavarenche and Val di Rhêmes), positioning six grids 40 nest boxes from 1000 to investigate ecology adaptations dormouse populations along altitudinal gradient. these years, checked irregularly, number marked animals was low. individuals captured highest increased 1 8 Valsavarenche 11 15 Rhêmes. These results seem confirm continuous presence species upper edge forest vegetation. data suggest some significant population fluctuations, but effect on densities cannot be excluded.

Population and individual-scale responses to patch size, isolation and quality in the hazel dormouse

Patch size, isolation and quality are key factors influencing species persistence in fragmented landscapes. However, we still lack a detailed understanding of how these variables exert their effects on populations inhabiting fragmented landscapes. At which ecological scale do they have an effect (e.g., individuals versus populations) and, on which demographic parameters? Answering these questio...

Managing Alpine Forests in a Changing Climate

There is mounting evidence that Alpine forest ecosystems will not be able to fully absorb the changes in site factors associated with climate change, such as higher temperatures, more intensive drought stress and associated biotic impacts since these changes exceed the adaptive capacity of the trees. The projected changes in temperature by 2.2 to 5.1 K from 1980 to 1999 to 2080 to 2099, for the...

Locating suitable areas for mangrove afforestation in the Sirik habitat, Hormozgan Province

Nowadays finding of ecologically suitable place or places for any activity, is one of the most important steps in the plan implementation. Roughly 94% of the net area of mangrove habitats in Iran is located in Hormozgan province which is the only place in south coast of the country that two species of mangrove trees grow naturally. In recent decades, biological reclamation and reforestation of ...

Take Only Photographs, Leave Only Footprints: Novel Applications of Non-Invasive Survey Methods for Rapid Detection of Small, Arboreal Animals.

The development of appropriate wildlife survey techniques is essential to promote effective and efficient monitoring of species of conservation concern. Here, we demonstrate the utility of two rapid-assessment, non-invasive methods to detect the presence of elusive, small, arboreal animals. We use the hazel dormouse, Muscardinus avellanarius, a rodent of conservation concern, as our focal speci...

Encroaching forests decouple alpine butterfly population dynamics.

Over the past 50 years, the rising tree line along Jumpingpound Ridge in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada, has reduced the area of alpine meadows and isolated populations that reside within them. By analyzing an 11-year data set of butterfly population sizes for 17 subpopulations along the ridge, we show that forest habitat separating alpine meadows decouples the dynamics of populations o...
